Examination rooms

Examination roomThe far wall of the exam room contains the "doctor toys". We have an infant scale for weighing the little critters, those under 10 kilograms.

We've invested in several anatomical models to help explain the common orthopedic diseases. Hidden away out of sight are various diagnostic materials like slides, eye dye test strips, tear test strips, an eye pressure meter, syringes and needles. Of course, the fridge under the counter contains a few vaccines and the special "doctors only" cookies.

Most of the work in this room occurs over here, on the examination table and by the bench. While most cats and small dogs feel quite secure on the tabletop or are easy to hold, the same is not true of medium and large dogs.

Long ago Dr. Wilkie observed that dogs become extremely anxious when placed up high on a slippery surface. Therefore, most dogs are examined on the floor, where they feel more relaxed and are more cooperative. We have carpet laid in front of the seating bench in order to give the animals a good grip (and to make it easier on Dr. Wilkie's knees). Clean carpets are exchanged regularly to maintain sanitation.
